WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – In an effort to address rising property crime rates, Wichita police have created a new task force focused on reducing crimes such as shoplifting and car burglaries. The Property Crime Reduction Task Force was established in October shoplifting in Wichita increased by 55% over an average of five years.

On Tuesday, WPD shared photos to highlight the task force’s progress. So far, more than $2 million worth of stolen items have been recovered and nearly 150 people have been arrested.

“These are incredibly staggering numbers, so we know it is working and we are determined and committed to moving this project forward,” said WPD Capt. Casey Slaughter, task force representative.

Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said the task force also helped address the officer shortage by pooling manpower from other agencies, such as the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Task force officers patrol during peak hours of the day and communicate with stores to respond more quickly to crimes.

“In several of these arrests, we find stolen property from numerous other crimes committed before this one, and many of those crimes were committed outside the city of Wichita, even outside the state of Kansas,” Sullivan said.

He said the public can help stop crimes in the future by staying vigilant and reporting crimes in progress to 911 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.

“Anyone who attempts to disrupt the peace of our neighborhoods, threaten the livelihoods of our businesses or undermine public safety will face swift and serious consequences,” Sullivan said.
